We have a bbq that was made by my father in his factory and gifted lovingly to his bbq loving son-in-law…
my husband too has used it for quite some years now and we have some wonderful food memories with this bbq….

So I can actually never think of buying those swanky bbqs…what about you….what do you have?

I don’t know if any one remembers these guys, but our grill is one of those hibachis that were popular in the 70s and 80s. It’s a bit larger than the regular hibachis of the time, and heavy as can be; how it still operates so many years now I have no idea.

heretoday I have often found things that were made about a decade back function far better than what is manufactured nowadays and it really is a rarity to see those old units breakdown so I am not at all surprised to hear that your hibachi is still functioning so well….

You’re not kidding here!  Things like microwaves and vacuum cleaners used to last practically forever but
now I find myself replacing things like that much too often.  :-(

To answer the original question, our BBQ equipment is bought.

I know we are diverting from the main topic…but what heretoday and katharina said about these old things is so true…you know we had this old refrigerator in my family for more than 30 years and it still fnctions…I cannot tell the same thing about my brand new whirlpool regrigerator that has already had 3 repair jobs…and so many problems…

We live in a condo building and I notice that the BBQs seem to be replaced every few years.

How about a BBQ built into a brick structure with a grill? I’ve seen some of those that looked pretty good.

mine is bought..

as for old stuff lasting longer, that is because manufacturers deliberately build in a short ‘life’ for electrical and household appliances. Why? because they want you to keep buying new stuff every couple of years to stimulate growth etc. If we all bought one TV and kept it for 30 years, the TV manufacturers wouldn’t make any money! They would close down and all the workers would lose their jobs.

I have seen them too and think it is really a good idea if you have the space outdoors for such a thing..I have seen some tv shows too wher e they built some bbqs that looked better than the kitchen…I wish I had the space for one.
